Gilbert “Gib” Ray Haywood
/Gilbert “Gib” Ray Haywood, 88, of Mineral City peacefully passed away Friday April 10, 2026 at his home surrounded by family.
Born September 8, 1937 in Mineral City to Paul and Opal (Mullis) Haywood.
He attended grade school in Mineral City and went to junior high and high school in Bloomfield.
In 1954 he graduated from Bloomfield High School and went to work in his dad’s law office. In 1955 he graduated from Milo Bennett Linotype trade school, there he mastered the art of operating a linotype machine and performing all maintenance on it. He worked in Danville and Shelbyville before coming to the Shoals News in 1956.
In 1959, June 14, he married the love of his life, Phyllis Stevens of Dover Hill and they started their life’s journey. They shared 66 years and 10 months of a wonderful life. They became the very proud parents of three sons and one daughter, which Gib said became number one in his life.
Gib was active in WRVAA print shop until his health no longer allowed. He loved riding motorcycles; his longest trip was to the rally in Sturgis South Dakota. He worked at many newspapers and print shops all over Indiana before ending his career at Naval Surface Warfare Center in Crane.
He was a member of the Mineral Methodist Church, White River Valley Antique Association, Greene County Historical Society and AARP.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Phyllis, his three children, Dee Haywood, Matt Haywood, Joe Haywood and his beloved dog, Boone.
Gib was preceded in death by one son, Steven Ray Haywood, two brothers, Philip Haywood, Fred Haywood and his parents.
Graveside services will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Tuesday April 14, 2026 at Walnut Grove Cemetery.
The family ask any memorial donations in Gib’s name be given to Greene County Humane Society.
