Worthington man arrested for theft at Linton Walmart
/A Worthington man is facing a felony theft charge after police say he stole tools, credit card readers, and an iPad from a Pepsi maintenance worker outside the Linton Walmart.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Greene Superior Court, Linton Police officers Bracey Breneman and Wayman Blazier were dispatched around 10 a.m. on Aug. 20 to Walmart, 2251 State Road 54, after a Pepsi employee reported the theft.
The worker told police he was repairing credit card readers on Pepsi vending machines and had briefly left his tools and equipment unattended. When he returned, he discovered the items — valued at more than $1,600 — were gone. The missing property included a bag of tools, an Apple iPad, and several credit card readers.
The worker said he tracked the iPad’s location to a residence on Hanna Street in Worthington. Walmart security also provided officers with surveillance footage showing the suspect taking the items and leaving in a vehicle.
When officers arrived at the Worthington residence, they found 68-year-old Gary Dean Haggard outside cleaning the same vehicle seen on the footage. Police said Haggard initially claimed he thought the items were trash but later admitted he realized they belonged to Pepsi after taking them home.
All of the stolen property was recovered and returned to the Pepsi employee, police said.
Court records show Haggard has a prior conviction for conversion in Marion County.
He was transported to the Greene County Jail where his bond was set at $4,000 surety with 10% cash allowed. He was released after posting $400.
