According to an officer who arrested a Worthington woman accused of stealing a pedometer from a store, she said she didn’t realize she had taken it and she asked about places she could get help for being a “clepto.”

Rheannon Marie Stalcup, 33, Worthington, was arrested by Deputy Marshal Marvin Holt of the Bloomfield Police Department on Tuesday, February 19.

Officer Holt responded to the CVS store on US 231 South in Bloomfield around noon that day to talk to the store manager about a theft that occurred on the previous day.

The manager said he found an empty Omron Pedometer box in the store so he viewed the store’s surveillance video. Officer Holt reported the video showed Stalcup taking the pedometer out of the box then stashing the box in an aisle directly in front of a store camera.

Officer Holt went to Stalcup’s residence in Worthington and when he talked to her, she said she had short-term memory loss and couldn’t remember if she had taken anything until he showed her a picture of the pedometer. Holt said Stalcup immediately said she had it and went to her bedroom, dumped out her purse, grabbed the pedometer and handed it to him.

Stalcup allegedly said she didn’t realize she took the pedometer and was inquiring about places she could go to get help because she was a “clepto.”

Holt noted she has a prior unrelated conviction for theft.

Stalcup was transported then booked in to the Greene County Jail. Her bond was set at $5,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. She posted $500 cash and was released the same day.

When she appeared in Greene Superior Court on Monday, February 25, Stalcup was charged with theft, a Class A misdemeanor, and theft – defendant has a prior conviction for either theft or conversion, a Level 6 felony. Deputy Public Defender David Hunter was appointed to represent her.
