Woman arrested after alleged $564 Walmart theft attempt
/A Poland woman was arrested July 15 after police say she attempted to steal more than $560 worth of merchandise from the Linton Walmart earlier this month.
Camilla A. Stewart, 43, faces a preliminary charge of Level 6 felony theft due to a prior theft-related conviction.
According to a probable cause affidavit, officers with the Linton Police Department responded to Walmart on July 4 after receiving a report of an attempted shoplifting.
An asset protection associate (APA) told officers he observed Stewart placing merchandise into a storage tote while shopping throughout the store. Court documents allege Stewart selected multiple items, removed security "spider wrap" devices from some merchandise, placed the items inside the tote, and covered them with the lid before leaving the store without attempting to pay.
The APA told investigators he confronted Stewart outside the store and instructed her to return the merchandise. According to the affidavit, Stewart ignored the request, abandoned the shopping cart after the APA recovered it, and fled to her vehicle. Police allege she dropped her cellphone while leaving the parking lot.
Investigators photographed the recovered merchandise and documented a total retail value of $563.92. Surveillance video reviewed by officers allegedly showed Stewart exiting the store with the shopping cart and leaving the parking lot after the confrontation. Police also noted that her vehicle was backed through the parking lot in a manner they believed could have created a hazard for other motorists.
Later that day, a male individual arrived at the Linton Police Department after tracking his wife's cellphone to the police department. Officers obtained identifying information before returning the phone.
According to court records, investigators compared a Bureau of Motor Vehicles photograph of Stewart to Walmart surveillance footage and determined they matched.
The affidavit also states Stewart has a prior theft-related conviction in Vigo County, resulting in the Level 6 felony theft charge.
She was arrested July 15 after a warrant for her arrest was issued July 10.
