Weekend domestic dispute results in couple going to jail

One person involved in a domestic dispute told a deputy he got his injuries from a fall down stairs. The other person involved said she got her injuries when the two were just scuffling around. Both ended up in jail, booked in for domestic battery.

Hiedi Ann Sargent, 44, and Thomas Martin “Marty” Sargent, 45, both of Newberry, were both arrested by Deputy Zachary Goad of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department after Goad was dispatched to a domestic dispute at a home on West Scotland-Newberry Road at 2:26 a.m. on Saturday, July 27.

The Sargents did not make the call to 911. Another individual at the residence, who heard glass breaking and said there was a fight going on, made the call.

Deputy Goad spoke to both Sargents and to others who were present at the residence. He reported the two had been in an argument which got physical. Although he observed both parties had signs of a physical fight, they both said they didn’t want him to photograph their injuries.

At some point after Deputy Goad began his investigation, GCSD Sgt. Bobby Pierce and Deputy Alan Jackson arrived to assist.

In addition to the signs of injuries, Deputy Goad said while Sgt. Pierce was inside the residence, he observed blood on the staircase and bathroom sink, a shower curtain lying on the floor of the shower, a broken shower rod lying in front of the bathroom sink and other broken items on the floor.

Sgt. Pierce transported Hiedi Sargent to the sheriff’s department and Deputy Goad transported Thomas Sargent. Both were booked in to jail a little before 4:30 a.m. Saturday.

In both cases, bond was set at $1,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed and they both posted $100 cash to be released, with Thomas Sargent agreeing to have no contact with Hiedi Sargent.

Yesterday, Tuesday, July 30, a letter from Thomas Sargent was received by Greene Superior Court. Records indicate the court interpreted the letter as a request to vacate the no-contact agreement. Records also indicate the court did not vacate the no-contact agreement – his request will be addressed at the initial hearing.

Both Sargents are scheduled to appear in court on August 15 at 8:30 a.m. They are both being charged with domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor.
