Traveler said that marijuana in her car was medicine
/A Kentucky woman on her way home from Michigan this week was allegedly transporting “cannabis butter” and a quantity of marijuana. She said it was medicine for people in Kentucky who need it. An officer said she was arrested on a preliminary charge of dealing.
Cassandra Rose Matheney, 49, from Beaver Dam, Kentucky, was arrested by Sgt. Bobby Pierce of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department after Sgt. Pierce pulled her vehicle over in Bloomfield on a traffic stop late Monday night.
Matheney was the driver of a white 2001 Cadillac Deville that failed to use a right turn signal when turning off Main Street onto Washington Street. The vehicle was stopped near South Washington and Spring streets.
Bloomfield Deputy Marshal Jordan Allor assisted on the scene during the traffic stop and during his conversation with the driver, he noticed the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.
Matheney was asked to exit the car and a search of the vehicle was conducted based on the probable cause of the odor of marijuana.
Sgt. Pierce reported that during the search, they found a blue cooler with a glass container with approximately two pounds of a green substance that was labeled as “cannabis butter.” Matheney allegedly admitted this was butter used to make edibles.
They also reported finding a number of hand-rolled cigarettes and burnt hand-rolled cigarettes made with green plant material, and zip bags containing a green plant material identified as marijuana. The marijuana seized weighed approximately three pounds.
When Matheney was questioned about the marijuana, she allegedly admitted some of it was hers but some of it belonged to other people. She claimed she didn’t buy it – it was given to her. She allegedly said it came from Michigan and she was taking it back to Kentucky for people who need it. She said it was medicine and that she was not selling it but was giving it to people.
Matheney was booked into the Greene County Jail around 12:19 a.m. Tuesday, July 30. She was later released on a surety bond and is scheduled to appear in Greene Superior Court on August 12 for an initial hearing.
Matheney is facing preliminary charges of dealing in marijuana, a Class A misdemeanor, and possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor.
