Updated: Bloomfield man accused of spending hours inside Lyons home before burglary arrest

A Bloomfield man accused of burglarizing a Lyons residence allegedly spent several hours inside the home and was captured multiple times on a trail camera before being taken into custody Sunday morning, according to court documents.

Shawn K. Toon was arrested June 14 after Greene County Sheriff's Department deputies responded to a report of a burglary in progress at a residence on West 500 South in Lyons.

According to a probable cause affidavit, authorities were contacted after the executor of an estate received trail camera images showing an unknown person inside the home. The images reportedly showed the suspect moving throughout the residence, going through belongings, opening closets and carrying bags of items.

Deputies arrived at the residence shortly before 8:40 a.m. and secured the property with assistance from the Linton Police Department. While officers surrounded the home, a male subject exited from an upper-level door and complied with commands to come downstairs, where he was taken into custody without incident.

The suspect was identified as Toon.

During a search, deputies allegedly located a small bag containing a green plant material that field-tested positive for marijuana.

Investigators said Toon admitted entering the residence after seeing a "for sale" sign on the property. He told detectives he believed someone else had previously been inside the home because a window was open and a door was unlocked. Toon also admitted entering the residence earlier in the morning, leaving for a period of time and later returning.

According to the affidavit, property caretakers and family representatives reported finding numerous rooms ransacked, drawers and cabinets opened, household items packed into bags and a sleeping bag, and medications missing from the residence. They also reported damage to cameras and signs of forced entry around the property.

Authorities reviewed trail camera photographs that allegedly showed Toon inside the residence beginning shortly after 1 a.m. June 14. The images reportedly captured him searching through belongings, carrying bags, removing items from the home and returning several hours later. Additional images showed him inside the residence shortly before deputies arrived.

Investigators also recovered several items from a nearby cornfield, including a pool cue that reportedly matched others found on the property.

Toon was transported to the Greene County Jail on preliminary charges of burglary, a Level 5 felony; theft, a Class A misdemeanor; and possession of marijuana, a Class A misdemeanor.
