Tuesday crash south of Bloomfield leads to arrest

A driver who crashed his truck south of Bloomfield late Tuesday morning is accused of OVWI and not cooperating with a deputy investigating the crash.

Dean Michael Fields, 45, Ellettsville, was arrested by Deputy Harvey Holt of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department on Tuesday afternoon, November 10.

Fields was identified as the driver of a green 1995 Ford Ranger that ran off the road and crashed sometime late Tuesday morning on State Road 45 south of Bloomfield.

Deputy Holt was dispatched to the scene of the crash at 11:43 a.m. When he arrived, he reported that Fields appeared to be intoxicated and could barely stand without falling over.

Deputy Holt tried to get Fields to stand against a vehicle for safety but Fields kept moving then walked away and was picking up items. Fields was told to stop but he didn’t and Fields was picking up a large bucket when the deputy caught up to him. Fields continued to walk away though told to stop.

The deputy reported he ordered Fields to put his hands behind his back but Fields pulled away when the deputy grabbed his hand. More orders followed and Fields continued to resist and kept walking away.

Deputy Holt placed Fields on the ground. Fields continued to resist but was taken into custody and transported to the Greene County Jail.

Fields consented to a chemical test – results are pending.

Fields was booked in at 1:51 p.m. His bond was set at $1,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed.

He is facing preliminary charges of:

  • Operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, a Class A misdemeanor,

  • Operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person with a prior conviction within seven years, a Level 6 felony,

  • Operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor,

  • Operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction within seven years, a Level 6 felony,

  • Resisting law enforcement – knowingly or intentionally forcibly resists, a Class A misdemeanor.
