A sexual offender who was convicted of sexual battery in 1996 is back in jail. He was wanted for allegedly failing to update his information on the sexual offender registry, and for failure to show up in court in another case involving domestic battery.

Christopher Lee Pilant, 47, of Jasonville, has been in custody since last Friday evening, July 12.

Pilant was wanted on two warrants for his arrest. One warrant that was issued Monday, July 8. The other warrant was issued on May 22. He’s accused of failure to register as a sexual offender in one case and domestic battery in the other.

Det. Shawn Cullison of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department investigated the case of failure to register.

On June 26, Det. Cullison was informed by Greene County Sex Offender Registrar Temperance Harris that Pilant is required to register for life but his registration can’t be verified and he can’t be located.

Det. Cullison learned GCSD Deputy Bruce Porter has been trying to locate Pilant since June 1 to verify his current address. Pilant was registered as living at 8362 West County Road 600 North in the Jasonville area but when Porter went there, it appeared nobody was home.

When Porter returned on June 12, he talked to a family member who said Pilant had been evicted a month earlier.

When Det. Cullison talked to the family member, he again said Pilant had moved out and it had been a few weeks since he had seen Pilant. The man said he didn’t know where Pilant was staying.

Pilant’s criminal history includes a conviction on December 19, 1996, in Greene County for sexual battery. He was sentenced to three years in the Indiana DOC and completed serving his time on July 13, 2000, but he then served a sentence for forgery and was not released from DOC until 2003.

In the other case pending against Pilant in Greene County, he was charged with domestic battery in late April. He appeared for his initial hearing, bonded out of jail and was scheduled to appear at a pre-trial conference in late May. He was a no-show and a warrant was issued.

Det. Cullison noted Pilant is also wanted in Knox County on a warrant issued for driving while suspended.

In the case involving domestic battery, the pre-trial conference has now been rescheduled for late July and his bond is set at $5000 surety with ten percent cash allowed.

In the case involving failure to register, Pilant is scheduled to appear in Greene Superior Court for an initial hearing tomorrow afternoon, July 16, and his bond is set at $4,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed.

As of late Monday, July 15, he was still in jail.
