Report of suspicious vehicle leads to arrests on drug charges
/Two men were arrested on drug charges late last Thursday after a caller reported a suspicious vehicle. A deputy alleged one of the men was in possession of over 10 grams of methamphetamine.
Larry Gene Chaney, 52, and Joshua Matthew Craig, 40, both of Owensburg, were arrested by Deputy Jordan Allor of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department late last Thursday, March 5. Both men were booked into the Greene County Jail shortly before midnight.
Deputy Allor was dispatched before 10 p.m. last Thursday after a caller reported a suspicious vehicle parked near some storage units on State Road 45 in eastern Greene County. When Deputy Allor located the vehicle and pulled into the parking area, the vehicle exited and headed south on the highway.
Deputy Allor followed and said the vehicle was weaving in its lane, traveling over the fog line several times and it was speeding. Deputy Allor initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of SR 45 and SR 54.
Chaney was the driver and Craig was a passenger in a black 2019 Ford F150. Deputy Allor reported he detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the truck and he noticed a burnt hand-rolled cigarette on the dash. When Chaney was asked if there was anything illegal in the truck, he allegedly said, “It’s clean as a whistle.”
GCSD Deputies Michael Coy and Camron Frye arrived on the scene to assist and Deputy Allor reported that items found in the truck included substances that field-tested positive as methamphetamine and marijuana along with paraphernalia. Some items were determined to belong to Chaney and some to Craig.
When Chaney was searched during the booking process, a white powder substance believed to be methamphetamine was located in Chaney’s wallet. It weighed in at 10.5 grams.
Preliminary charges have been filed against Chaney for possession of methamphetamine in an amount between five and ten grams with enhancement, a Level 4 felony.
Preliminary charges filed against Craig include: Possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony; possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor; and possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.
Both men were being held without bond pending their appearances in court.
