Man lands in jail after trip to see girlfriend

A man whose license had been suspended for life apparently drove a truck on a trip to see his girlfriend in eastern Greene County. As he was driving away, he was stopped by a deputy who reported finding meth in the truck.

When Kevin Albert Douthitt, 51, Bloomington, appeared in Greene Superior Court last week for an initial hearing via two-way video between the courtroom and the Greene County Jail, he was formally charged with operating a motor vehicle after forfeiture of license for life, a Level 5 felony, and possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony.

Douthitt was arrested by Deputy Jordan Allor of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department following an incident in eastern Greene County that began late Tuesday, May 5.

Deputy Allor responded to the area after a concerned citizen called the sheriff’s department at 10:14 p.m. and said there was a black Chevrolet dually pickup truck parked near her home, with nobody inside the truck. Then a second citizen called in about the truck saying they saw one person get out of it and they provided the truck’s license plate number. Dispatch ran the plate number.

Deputy Allor was on his way when dispatch informed him it was the same truck and same driver that was involved in a domestic in mid-March at a neighboring residence. Douthitt was the driver of the truck at that time, and Deputy Allor had responded to the earlier domestic.

Deputy Allor knew Douthitt was a habitual traffic violator and his license had been suspended for life, and dispatch confirmed the status.

Deputy Camron Frye also responded and when the two deputies arrived on the scene and saw the truck parked in a yard, they went to the neighboring property where the earlier domestic had occurred.

When they talked to the resident, he was very upset and said he thought Douthitt must be nearby but that Douthitt was not welcome on his property. He also said his niece, who was Douthitt’s girlfriend, was in the residence.

The deputies located Douthitt, not only on the man’s property, but in his basement with the niece. The deputies then told the man that both Douthitt and the niece were gathering their clothes and both would be leaving. They did leave, in the niece’s vehicle. But as the deputies continued to talk to the resident, both the niece’s vehicle and the black truck drove by.

Deputy Allor got into his patrol vehicle and followed, then saw the black truck travel left of center almost onto the left shoulder of the road. He conducted a traffic stop. Douthitt was the driver who said he was left of center while trying to light a cigarette.

Douthitt was handcuffed for transport to jail and when the truck was inventoried, Deputy Allor reported finding a black digital scale with a white crystal residue and three metal spoons with white crystal residue – they field-tested positive for the presence of methamphetamine. Douthitt allegedly said he didn’t know these things were in the truck.

When Douthitt was booked in around 12:48 a.m. on Wednesday, May 6, he was held without bond pending court appearance.

During his initial hearing, his bond was set at $14,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. Since the hearing, he posted $1,400 and has been released.
