Maine man arrested for stealing more than $1,300 in coins
/A 27-year-old Maine man appeared in Greene Circuit Court Jan. 24 following an incident in which he allegedly broke into a Worthington home, stealing more than $1,300 in coins.
Greene County Sheriff’s Department Det. Shawn Cullison arrested Tristan Dew, of Levant, Maine, on Jan. 22 after responding to a call about a break-in.
On the morning of Jan. 22, a Worthington homeowner contacted the Greene County Sheriff’s Department and reported he had caught someone – later identified as Dew – breaking into his home. When Greene County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Terry Wade and Deputy Harvey Holt arrived at the residence, they took Dew into custody. According to a probable cause affidavit, while performing a search of Dew, officers located a pair of white gloves, a black toboggan, a camouflage face mask, a cell phone, and two SD cards from cameras. Greene County Sheriff’s Department Det. Shawn Cullison arrived on the scene shortly after.
The homeowner explained that after his house was broken into in December 2023, he installed cameras. The cameras detect movement, take a picture, and send the picture to his phone. That morning, the homeowner allegedly left his residence at 8 a.m. to pick up two individuals in Worthington. While in town, he alleged he began receiving photos from his cameras. The photos, according to the probable cause affidavit, showed a male inside his home.
Upon arriving back at his home, the homeowner told officers he saw a white Ford parked at the end of his driveway. As he drove down the driveway, he saw a male running away from the house. One of the men who was with the homeowner chased him down and tackled him. The homeowner, according to the probable cause affidavit, held Dew at gunpoint until officers arrived.
According to the probable cause affidavit, the homeowner showed Det. Cullison photos he had received from the three cameras in his home. Photos, according to the probable cause affidavit, included the male entering the front door of the residence, the male walking through the home talking on a cell phone, a close-up of the male’s face, and the male leaving the front door.
The homeowner told officers he had locked the front door when leaving, however; he believed Dew entered the residence through the front door. According to the probable cause affidavit, the front door had damage to the trim and frame where it appeared Dew had pushed or
During a walkthrough of the home, the homeowner showed Det. Cullison three buckets in the kitchen. One was full of loose change, one had a few coins inside, and one was empty. According to the probable cause, the homeowner also showed Det. Cullison several small cloth bags. The homeowner alleged the bags had rolled up change inside but were now empty.
While in the basement of the residence, according to the probable cause affidavit, a black backpack was visible from the back door. The backpack was located at the bottom of a retaining wall next to a shoe print in the snow. Det. Cullison wrote that he attempted to pick up the backpack, but it was too heavy. Upon opening the main pouch of the backpack, Cullison located a large amount of loose and rolled coins. Officers later took the coins to a bank to be counted. The coins equaled $1,329.22.
Dew was transported to Greene County Jail for an interview; however, according to the probable cause affidavit, he did not want to answer questions.
Dew is being charged with burglary, a Level 4 Felony; theft, a Level 6 Felony; and criminal mischief, a Class B Misdemeanor.
Dew was held without bond until his initial hearing Jan. 24. At that time, his bond was set at $40,000 surety with 10% cash allowed.
