A Lyons man accused of throwing things and making a threat bonded out of jail after his arrest but he’s due in court Monday on misdemeanor charges.

John Henry Tonyan III, 58, Lyons, was arrested on Saturday, November 3, by Greene County Sheriff’s Deputy James Carpenter.

Around 10 a.m. that morning, a woman reported Tonyan was intoxicated and threatening her with a knife. Deputy Carpenter responded to her home in Lyons along with Officer Dustin Cain of the Jasonville Police Department.

Deputy Carpenter, the investigating officer, said when the officers met with the woman outside her house, she said Tonyan had made a big mess, which he denied, but she asked him to clean it up. She said he then threw various cleaning tools and items at her, hitting her shins, and then told her he was going to kill her by the next day. She said he kept a machete at the front door in case of intruders and she was scared he would get it and use it so she hid it.

By the time officers arrived, Tonyan had fallen asleep on the couch. When they spoke to him, he allegedly denied the two had been fighting and that he’d thrown anything. However, Deputy Carpenter reported they observed the items thrown on the floor and the condition of Tonyan’s clothing gave the officers visible confirmation of the woman’s story about a mess.

Tonyan was taken into custody and transported to the Greene County Jail without incident.

Tonyan’s bond was set at $2,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. The next day, on Sunday, November 4, he posted $200 cash, was released and given a court date.

When he appears in Greene Superior Court, he will be charged with domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor, and intimidation involving threatening another with intent that they engage in conduct against their will, a Class A misdemeanor.
