Linton man accused of shoplifting and “skip scanning”
/A Linton man is accused stealing $116 worth of items from a store in Linton. He allegedly concealed some items and admitted to “skip scanning” other items.
Steven Isaac House, 57, Linton, is facing a preliminary charge of theft, a Class A misdemeanor, following an investigation by Officer Orry Phipps of the Linton Police Department into an incident that occurred on Wednesday, November 25.
At 2:42 p.m. that day, Officer Phipps was dispatched to the Walmart store in Linton where employees reported they had stopped a man they said had been caught shoplifting.
When Officer Phipps arrived, one of the store’s asset protection associates told him he saw House select several items from departments throughout the store. He said he saw House select a pack of batteries then put them in a bag from a previous transaction, go through a self check-out then later exit the store without paying for the batteries.
The associate said after House was stopped, he admitted to “skip scanning” several items such as batteries, knitted hats, razor blades and a case of Mountain Dew.
Officer Phipps was provided with a DVD of video surveillance footage of the incident and he reported what he saw in the video was consistent with what the associate had told him.
The total value of the items House is accused of stealing from the store was $116.22.
A criminal case was filed last week against House and a summons was issued yesterday ordering House to appear in Greene Superior Court for an initial hearing in February.
