Greene County opens cooling center during extreme heat warning
/Greene County Emergency Management is encouraging residents to take precautions during this week's dangerous heat and has announced a cooling center for those needing relief from the extreme temperatures.
According to a news release issued Tuesday, Greene County remains under an Extreme Heat Warning issued by the National Weather Service. Afternoon temperatures are expected to reach the mid-90s through Thursday, with heat index values climbing as high as 109 degrees.
Emergency Management officials warn that the prolonged heat significantly increases the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for those spending extended periods outdoors or without access to air conditioning.
To help residents stay safe, the following cooling center is available:
Bloomfield Town Park – South Shelter House
Open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. until further notice.
Residents in other Greene County communities are encouraged to visit their local public libraries during normal business hours if they need a cool place to escape the heat.
Emergency Management also recommends the following safety precautions:
Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
Remain in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible.
Limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing.
Check on elderly neighbors, family members and others who may be vulnerable to heat-related illness.
Never leave children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle, even for a short period.
Officials remind residents that heat-related illnesses can develop quickly. Anyone experiencing symptoms such as confusion, difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness, or hot, dry skin should seek immediate medical attention or call 911.
Additional cooling center locations will be announced if they become available.
