Derek McKee named Chamber’s 2025 Citizen of the Year for quiet, consistent community leadership

The Linton-Stockton Chamber of Commerce honored longtime community supporter Derek McKee as its 2025 Citizen of the Year during the chamber’s annual dinner, recognizing his steady leadership, generosity, and behind-the-scenes service to the City of Linton.

The award was presented by Chamber Board President Carla Gambill, who described McKee as someone whose impact comes not from seeking recognition, but from consistently showing up when the community needs him.

“Some people lead loudly. Others lead consistently,” Gambill said. “Tonight, we honor someone whose influence comes not from taking the spotlight—but from showing up, giving back, and lifting up their community in ways that truly matter.”

Gambill said McKee is a familiar presence at local events, whether cheering from the stands at athletic contests, supporting school performances, or lending a hand at community and school functions. She described him as someone who sees a need and finds a way to meet it—often with a tool belt in hand.

“He doesn’t need a microphone to make an impact,” Gambill said. “He’s present. He’s steady. And he’s always there when Linton needs him.”

Central to McKee’s service, Gambill said, are the values that guide his life—faith, family and friends—which are reflected in his approach to community involvement.

Through his leadership, the annual Smokin & Jokin event has grown into a major fundraising effort benefiting multiple local causes. Funds raised through Smokin & Jokin have supported the A.M. Risher Pool Revitalization Project, tornado relief for the McCammon family, Erin’s Purpose, the Greene County Hospital Foundation’s Lexy Poindexter Memorial Project, and Greene County Night to Shine, among others.

“What makes his contributions so special isn’t just the funds raised—it’s the heart behind them,” Gambill said. “He brings people together. He creates opportunities to give back. And he reminds us that community doesn’t happen by accident—it happens because people choose to invest in it.”

Gambill noted that during a year marked by significant challenges for the city, McKee remained a steady presence.

“In a year that challenged Linton in many ways, he did not step back,” she said. “He stepped in.”

The chamber’s Citizen of the Year award recognizes individuals whose actions have made a meaningful and lasting impact on the community through service, leadership, and commitment.

“For his unwavering dedication to Linton, his selfless service through community fundraising efforts, and his quiet commitment to making Linton a better place for everyone, it is my honor to present the 2025 Citizen of the Year Award to Derek McKee,” Gambill said.
