Domestic dispute leads to arrest

A domestic dispute between a couple in the Springville area late last Friday night resulted in the arrest of a man accused of strangulation and domestic battery as well as interfering with the reporting of a crime.

Johnathen Hendershot

Johnathen Donald Hendershot, 46, was arrested by Greene County Sheriff’s Deputy Zachary Goad after the deputy responded around 11:13 p.m. last Friday night to a domestic dispute at a residence on Blue Sky North. Hendershot was booked into the Greene County Jail around 3:18 a.m. Saturday, June 8. Records indicate Hendershot is from Gosport.

Deputy Goad, the investigating officer, was dispatched after a woman called and said Hendershot had taken her cell phone and the keys to her vehicle and had put her in a choke hold. She made the call from a neighbor’s house.

GCSD Deputy Alan Jackson and Sgt. Bobby Pierce also responded to assist on the scene.

When the deputies arrived, Hendershot had left the scene and could not be located right away but he later returned to the residence and was taken into custody after the woman again called the sheriff’s department to report Hendershot was in the backyard yelling at her.

When interviewed, the woman said she was trying to exit a vehicle when Hendershot got her in a chokehold to try to prevent her from getting out. She also said he had thrown her keys out into the woods and had taken her cell phone when she was trying to call 911.

Hendershot allegedly said he had put his arm around her trying to pull her back into the vehicle because she was trying to jump out and he didn’t want her to be hurt. He also allegedly said he tossed her keys to keep her from drinking and driving and he showed deputies where to find the keys, and he said he put both their cell phones under the seat of the car because they were fighting and didn’t need cell phones.

Hendershot’s bond was set at $6,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. He posted $600 cash and was released on June 8.

He is scheduled to appear in Greene Superior Court on Thursday, June 13, on preliminary charges of:

  • Strangulation, a Level 6 felony.

  • Domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor.

  • Interference with the reporting of a crime, a Class A misdemeanor.
