Worthington Lions Club makes decision to not sponsor this year's yard sale event

Worthington Lions Club makes decision to not sponsor this year's yard sale event

The Worthington Lions Club, sponsors of the annual Around-The Town Yard Sale event over Labor Day Weekend in Worthington, announced today they made the decision to forego sponsoring the event this year.

The Lions Club’s announcement:

After much consideration and investigation of options, the Worthington Lions Club made the difficult decision to forego sponsoring the annual Town Yard Sales in 2020.

Indiana is in Stage 4.5 of reopening, with specific requirements for special community events drawing more than 250 people (which the Yard Sales clearly do). We investigated ways to support the event in a safe, responsible manner. Unfortunately, it’s not possible for the Club to meet the published standards and requirements for a safe and healthy event in Stage 4.5. Unfortunately, this means the Lions Club will not complete its normal support, which includes advertising in media, providing porta-potties around Town, compiling a map of locations, or serving our very popular breakfast.

We wish everyone a safe, healthy, and enjoyable Labor Day weekend. We pray that the conditions allow for us to have our Second Annual Christmas celebration this December, and the Club plans to make the 2021 Worthington Yard Sales even better.

WPD hires new deputy marshal; Worthington Town Hall reopens to foot traffic, masks mandatory

During a special meeting of the Worthington Town Council late last Friday, a WPD reserve officer was hired to be a full-time Deputy Marshal for the Worthington Police Department.

During the last regular monthly meeting of the Council earlier in the week, WPD Deputy Marshal Brittany Allen submitted her resignation leaving a full-time spot open on the department.

To stop into the vacant spot, Reserve Officer Hunter Golden was selected, according to Council President Tom Franklin.

Franklin said Golden had already gone through the application and interview process when the Council was looking for candidates earlier this year.

“Hunter has been working as a reserve for a few weeks now and shows a lot of promise,” said Franklin.

The special meeting was conducted at 5 p.m. last Friday, July 17.

Franklin said Golden will start full-time duties on Saturday, July 25.

In other matters taken up by the Council last week, the Council announced that Town Hall in the Worthington Municipal Building was expected to be open to foot traffic from the public starting today, Monday, July 20.

“Masks must be worn in the building,” said Franklin. “Anyone not wanting to wear a mask may still use the outside drop box.”

The Council also announced they will start to reopen council meetings to the public starting next month.

“The August meeting of the Council will be open to a limited number of citizens,” said Franklin. “Masks and social distancing will be mandatory. Anyone wishing to attend should call Town Hall and ask to be placed on the agenda.”
