Bloomfield woman arrested on OWI charges after leaving scene of crash
/A Bloomfield woman was arrested early March 1 after police say she left the scene of a crash and was later found to be intoxicated.
According to court documents, Kayla Ann Leone, 35, was arrested on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent of at least .15, operating while intoxicated, and operating while intoxicated endangerment.
Bloomfield Police Department Deputy Marshal Jordan Brant reported being dispatched around 1:03 a.m. to the area of East Spring Street after a resident reported hearing tires squealing followed by a crash.
The caller told dispatch he looked outside and saw a silver SUV that had crashed into a yard about 100 yards from his residence and observed a woman with long brown hair run from the scene.
Officers located the vehicle, identified as a silver 2021 Subaru Ascent, parked on a sidewalk near a residence on Spring Street with moderate damage to the front passenger-side tire area. Deputies with the Greene County Sheriff’s Department and troopers with the Indiana State Police responded to assist.
While officers were investigating, a man arrived and told police the vehicle belonged to his daughter, Leone. Hughes told officers Leone was at a nearby residence on Mechanic Street.
Police responded to the residence and made contact with Leone, who matched the description provided by the witness. According to the affidavit, officers observed she was visibly upset and detected the odor of alcohol on her breath.
Leone reportedly told officers she had been driving the vehicle and had consumed two margaritas earlier in the evening. She also acknowledged leaving the crash scene and said she walked to the residence after being unable to make calls from her cell phone.
Leone agreed to perform standardized field sobriety tests at the Greene County Sheriff’s Department. During testing, officers observed several indicators of impairment, according to the affidavit.
A certified chemical breath test administered at 2:01 a.m. produced a result of 0.185 grams of alcohol per 210 liters of breath, according to police.
Leone was then placed under arrest and transported to the Greene County Jail without incident.
Court records show an initial hearing scheduled for March 5 was later canceled. Leone is scheduled to appear in Greene Superior Court on March 24 for a specialized driving privileges hearing.
