Bloomfield man arrested on multiple drug charges after traffic stop
/A traffic stop in Bloomfield led to the arrest of a man on multiple drug-related charges after authorities reported finding methamphetamine, syringes, and other controlled substances in his vehicle.
According to court documents, Wilbur Eugene Butler, 45, Bloomfield, was arrested March 4 following a traffic stop conducted by the Indiana State Police.
Trooper Caleb Sipes reported he was stationary near North Lawrence Hollow Drive when he observed a gray Subaru Forester with an Indiana license plate that did not match the vehicle. A check through the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles showed the plate was registered to a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado.
Sipes initiated a traffic stop around 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of State Road 54 and State Road 43 in Bloomfield.
During the stop, authorities confirmed Butler had an active arrest warrant through Monroe County as well as an active parole warrant, according to the affidavit.
Butler was taken into custody at the scene. During questioning, Butler reportedly told officers there was drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine inside the vehicle.
A K-9 unit conducted a free-air sniff of the vehicle and alerted to the odor of controlled substances, police said. Officers then searched the vehicle and located several items, including:
Three plastic bags containing a crystal-like substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine
32 syringes, including one loaded with a suspected controlled substance
A digital scale with residue
Glass smoking devices and other drug paraphernalia
A grinder containing plant material that field-tested positive for marijuana
Multiple pills identified as Suboxone and gabapentin
Authorities also located aluminum foil, straws, and other items commonly associated with drug use.
Butler told officers the substance in the vehicle would test positive for methamphetamine and said the scale was used so he would not “get ripped off,” according to the affidavit.
Butler later told officers he had a prescription for the Suboxone located in the vehicle.
Butler was transported to the Greene County Jail, where he was booked on preliminary charges of:
Possession of methamphetamine, Level 6 felony
Unlawful possession of a syringe, Level 6 felony
Unlawful possession of a legend drug, Level 6 felony
Possession of marijuana, Class B misdemeanor
Possession of paraphernalia, Class C misdemeanor
Butler is scheduled to appear in Greene Superior Court for an initial hearing on March 9.
