Bloomfield woman arrested for OWI after allegedly driving into grass, failing sobriety tests
/A Bloomfield woman is scheduled to appear in court on July 10 following a June 27 arrest on charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated after an Indiana Conservation Officer observed erratic driving and initiated a traffic stop that led to multiple failed sobriety tests.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Greene County Superior Court, Indiana Conservation Officer Cole Hollingsworth was traveling eastbound on State Road 58 around 3:35 p.m. when he noticed a silver Dodge Caravan cross the white fog line multiple times, at one point veering off the roadway with half the vehicle leaving the pavement. The driver, later identified as 37-year-old Maranda D. Burch, then abruptly braked and turned into a South Dry Branch Road residence without using a turn signal.
Hollingsworth initiated a traffic stop, and the vehicle eventually came to a stop in the driveway of a Dry Branch Road. When approached, according to the probable cause affidavit, Burch appeared surprised to see the officer and reportedly smelled of alcohol.
Deputy Caleb Sipes of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene and, according to the affidavit, stated that Burch showed visible signs of impairment, including the odor of alcohol. After exiting the vehicle, Burch allegedly failed a series of Standardized Field Sobriety Tests.
When questioned, Burch admitted to consuming three shots of vodka. A preliminary breath test indicated a blood alcohol content of 0.212 percent, more than twice the legal limit. Burch was then transported to the Greene County Sheriff’s Department, where she exhibited emotional distress.
At the jail, Burch again failed multiple field sobriety tests and consented to a chemical blood draw. The draw, conducted by Greene County EMS personnel at 5:20 p.m., was sent to the Indiana State Department of Toxicology for further analysis.
She was booked into the Greene County Jail on preliminary misdemeanor charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and operating while intoxicated endangering a person.
