Murlyn A. Chambers

Murlyn A. Chambers, 94, of Muncie, Indiana passed away peacefully early Friday, February 20, 2026 at Envive of Muncie.

She was born in Bucktown, Indiana, January 20, 1932, the daughter of Murl Chambers and Ophelia Hardesty Chambers. She was the oldest of four children, and from her earliest years embodied the steady, loving presence that would define her life.

She graduated from Anderson High School and Ball State University.

A lifelong educator, Murlyn devoted 42 years to teaching high school English and serving as a school librarian. She began her career in Portland and Wilkinson, Indiana, later teaching at Highland High School in Anderson, IN and at Benton High School in Michigan.

Throughout her career, she served students from many different backgrounds and was deeply committed to their success. She earned the genuine respect of her students through her strength, fairness and unwavering belief in their potential. A fierce advocate, she wrote countless letters of recommendation that helped her students pursue college and meaningful careers, often changing the trajectory of their lives.

A voracious reader, Murlyn loved books from childhood through her final days, frequently reading several at time. Literature was both her vocation and her joy.

After retiring from teaching, she returned home to faithfully care for her mother, reflecting the devotion that characterized her entire life. As the oldest sibling, she was like a second mother to her sisters and brother. who remember her with deep gratitude.

Murlyn’s Christian faith was the steady foundation of her life. Prayer was central to her, and her deep love for God and for others. She especially cherished the hymn “Amazing Grace.” A beautiful expression of the faith that sustained her.

Family was one of her greatest treasures. She delighted in her two sisters, one brother, five nieces and nephews, and numerous great-nieces and great nephews. She never forgot a birthday, faithfully sending cards year after year, small but meaningful reminders of her constant love and thoughtfulness.

She also had a special affection for cats and cared for several beloved feline companions throughout her life. Those who knew her and remember her as kind, patient, considerate, faithful, and deeply devoted to both family and students whose influence extended far beyond what she ever fully knew.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at Newkirk’s Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:00PM until services at 1:00 PM Tuesday.
