Alan Maurice Smith, age 77, of Pleasantville, passed away on Thursday, July 8, 2021, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born in Sullivan, IN on February 8, 1944, the son of Ferne Maurice & Lois Evelyn (Bedwell) Smith.

He was a 1962 graduate of Union High School. He achieved his Undergraduate Degree in Zoology at Indiana University and his Master’s Degree in Science Education at Indiana State University. He was a former science teacher then went to work at Peabody Coal Company where he retired. He enjoyed mowing the lawn, traveling, tending to his house plants, reading, genealogy, and spending time with his grandkids.

Alan is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Brenda (Cox) Smith of Pleasantville, IN; children, Lynn (Dave) Guy of Bloomfield, Ryan Smith of Dugger and Anjuli (Gabe) Laughlin of Odon; grandchildren, Gracie Alsman, Halle Smith, Brentley Boney and Vera Laughlin; brothers, Gary (Nancy) Smith and Tim (Sal) Smith and sisters, Jan Phillips and Jayne Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two infant sisters.

Private services were observed by the family.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton.
