Greene County Commissioners issue Travel Warning effective immediately; Travel may be restricted to emergency personnel only

A Travel Status Warning (Red) Level III was issued for Greene County early Tuesday morning, February 16. It is effective immediately, restricting travel in the county to emergency personnel only.

Greene County Emergency Management Director Roger Axe announced the status change around 8:10 a.m.

“Due to extraordinary circumstances, president of the Greene County Board of Commissioners, Nathan Abrams, has set Greene County's Road Travel Status to Level III or Warning,” said Axe.

Only the Commissioners can make this determination, according to Axe. A county’s emergency management agency notifies the state and the public of changes in status.

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security defines three travel status levels. Of these, a Warning (Red) Level III is the highest level of local travel advisory. It means that travel may be restricted to emergency management workers only.

During a Warning (Red) Level III Travel Status, local travel advisory individuals are directed to:

  • 1. Refrain from all travel

  • 2. Comply with necessary emergency measures

  • 3. Cooperate with public officials and disaster services forces in executing emergency operations plans, and

  • 4. Obey and comply with the lawful directions of properly identified officers.

NWS issues Winter Storm Warning for all of central Indiana

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect starting tonight (Sunday, February 14) for all of central Indiana. Eight to 12 inches of snow is possible in the warning.

2021-02-14 NWS Snow Warning.png

Winds of 20 mph with occasional gusts to 30 mph are expected Monday evening, and the heaviest snowfall is currently expected between 4 pm and midnight.

Travel is expected to be very difficult, and especially treacherous Monday evening as heavy snow could combine with winds to produce near zero visibility at times. Blowing and drifting will also make snow removal difficult and could continue the travel problems into the day on Tuesday.

Use caution if you must travel. Wear appropriate clothing and keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

Hoosiers age 65 and older now eligible for COVID-19 vaccine

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Department of Health today announced that Hoosiers age 65 and older are now eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

The vaccine is available at no cost, and appointments can be made by visiting https://ourshot.in.gov. Hoosiers who do not have access to a computer or cell phone or who need assistance with registration also can call 211 or contact one of Indiana’s Area Agencies on Aging for assistance. A caregiver or loved one may make an appointment on behalf of an eligible senior.

The vaccine requires two doses to obtain full immunity. Appointments for the second dose will be made at the clinic when the first dose is administered.

Vaccine supply remains limited nationally. Indiana has adopted an age-based approach to expanding vaccine eligibility in order to fulfill its goals of reducing hospitalizations, saving lives and protecting vulnerable populations. Hoosiers age 60 and older comprise 22.5 percent of the population but account for 64.1 percent of hospitalizations and 93.3 percent of COVID-19 deaths.

Additional groups will be added as more vaccine becomes available. Updates will be posted at https://ourshot.in.gov.
