Worthington traffic stop leads to drug arrest

A routine traffic stop last week in Worthington resulted in the arrest of a Bloomfield man on multiple drug-related charges, including felony possession of cocaine.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Greene Circuit Court, Worthington Police Officer Austin T. Shadoin initiated a traffic stop at approximately 11 p.m. on May 28 after observing a black Nissan Altima with a non-functioning license plate light near the intersection of Commercial and Main streets.

The driver, identified as Zachary P. Bonen, 25, of Bloomfield, was pulled over at the intersection of Commercial and Lafayette streets. Upon approaching the vehicle, Officer Shadoin reported detecting a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the car. Bonen was described as hesitant to hand over his driver’s license and registration but eventually complied, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Officer Shadoin requested Bonen step out of the vehicle. After initially showing reluctance, Bonen exited and was read his Miranda rights multiple times before affirming that he understood them.

Bonen admitted there was a glass pipe inside the vehicle. A search of the car yielded multiple items of concern, including a glass smoking device with burn residue, a jar of waxy material that tested positive for marijuana, a pink straw with white powder residue, a cigarette pack containing a baggie of white powder, and a plate with white powder residue under the driver’s seat. According to the probable cause affidavit, the white substance later tested positive for cocaine.

Bonen reportedly told officers the substance was cocaine. He was placed under arrest at the scene. During the search, officers also discovered a Sig Sauer 9mm handgun on Bonen’s person, which was secured by police. The vehicle was towed from the scene, and all evidence was logged into the Worthington Police Department’s evidence system.

Bonen faces preliminary charges of possession of cocaine or a narcotic drug less than five grams with a firearm enhancement, a Level 5 felony; possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor; and possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.

Bonen was transported to the Greene County Jail where he was initially held without bond. At his initial hearing in Greene Circuit Court on May 30, his bond was set at $10,000 surety with 10% cash allowed.
