A man was arrested last weekend after driving his girlfriend to the hospital. He told a deputy they had been in an argument and she jumped into his car as it was moving, causing damage to the car, breaking the windshield and injuring herself.

Troy Allen Lowe, 36, Bloomfield, was arrested last Saturday, February 22, by Deputy Jordan Allor of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department following an investigation into an incident that occurred in Newberry.

Deputy Allor, along with Deputy Michael Coy, were dispatched around 3 p.m. that Saturday after someone called 911 and reported their neighbor, later identified as Troy Lowe, had hit his girlfriend with a vehicle during an argument. The deputies were on their way when dispatch advised them Lowe had left the area with the girlfriend in the vehicle and he was headed to the hospital. The deputies also headed to the hospital.

When the deputies arrived at Greene County General Hospital, they located the vehicle at the ambulance entrance where hospital personnel were removing the woman from the vehicle. Deputy Allor said both the woman and Lowe had blood on their clothing, the vehicle had damage to the front passenger side, was missing the tire on the front passenger side, and the windshield was busted on the driver’s side.

With the woman receiving medical attention inside the hospital, Deputy Coy checked the status of Lowe’s driver’s license and reported it was suspended with a prior conviction in 2016 for driving while suspended. He was also wanted on a Writ of Attachment.

Deputy Allor placed Lowe under arrest.

When Lowe wanted a smoke before transfer to the sheriff’s department, Deputy Allor offered to get a cigarette out of his car, and Lowe allegedly admitted there was marijuana in his car.

Officer Joe Riley of the Linton Police Department had also arrived to assist on the scene and when his K9 Kona performed a sniff around the car, the K9 alerted.

Inside the car, officers found a substance believed to be marijuana, a marijuana grinder, a bag containing a white crystal substance that field-tested positive as methamphetamine, a smoking device and other paraphernalia.

Once at the jail, Deputy Allor got a search warrant approved and ambulance personnel got a blood sample – results pending.

Deputy Allor talked to Lowe about what happened, first at the hospital then on the way to the sheriff’s department. Lowe explained they were asleep, he woke up first and when he asked his girlfriend where the keys were, she “exploded” on him and an argument occurred. He said when he left, she was mad and was kicking and throwing objects but he drove away. He said he drove about four blocks then decided to go back and saw her walking. Lowe claimed that as he approached, she jumped at the car. He said he stopped, saw blood coming from her head, tried to help her then drove to the neighbors’ house and asked them to call for an ambulance, then returned to her, put her in the passenger seat and drove to the hospital.

When Deputy Allor located the scene of the incident on Franklin Street in Newberry, he also talked to the neighbors who made the 911 call.

In a probable cause affidavit written by Deputy Allor, Lowe appears to have cooperated with the investigation and answered the deputy’s questions both at the hospital and on the way to jail.

Around 6:30 p.m., when Deputy Allor talked to the trauma doctor treating the girlfriend, the doctor said the woman was in critical condition and he was not sure which way things would go. He said he was waiting for the patient to wake up to find out “how much of this is drugs or a bad brain injury.”

The next evening, Allor talked to the doctor again. The doctor said the woman was no longer on a breathing tube and was awake and stable. He said the woman’s injuries were minimal and her condition had improved.

Lowe was booked into jail around 6:15 on the night of the incident and was initially held without bond pending court appearance.

When Lowe appeared at his initial hearing yesterday, February 27, a public defender was appointed to represent him and his bond was set at $25,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. As of Friday evening, he had not yet posted bond and remained in jail.

Lowe has been charged with:

  • Possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony,

  • Driving while suspended, with the operation of a vehicle resulting in bodily injury, a Level 6 felony, and

  • Possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor.
