Warrant out for Linton man accused of carrying holstered gun without a permit
/A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a Linton man who didn’t show up in court this week. He’s accused of carrying a Ruger .22 caliber handgun in a holster on his right hip when he didn’t have a handgun permit.
Ryan Lee Workman, 39, Linton, was arrested in early May along with James Robert Gibson, Jr., 39, also of Linton. They were taken into custody by Officer John Agan of the Linton Police Department during a traffic stop.
Gibson has appeared in court for an initial hearing and was released from jail after posting bond.
Workman posted bond, was released and scheduled to appear in court for his initial hearing yesterday, May 16, but he was a no show and a warrant was issued.
Officer Agan was on patrol in Linton when he saw Gibson’s GMC Sierra truck fail to signal a turn and initiated a traffic stop at the intersection of State Road 59 S and L Street SE. Gibson was the driver. Workman was a passenger.
During the stop, LPD Sgt. Logan Hobbs and Officer Andrew Duguay of the Jasonville Police Department arrived to assist and Duguay used his K9 Blitz to conduct a free air sniff of the vehicle. Blitz alerted to the presence of the odor of narcotics. Gibson and Workman were asked to exit the truck.
As Workman was getting out, Officer Agan saw he was carrying a Ruger .22 caliber handgun in a holster on his right side hip. He said he asked Workman if he had a permit and Workman said, “No, I do not.”
Officer Agan reported that Sgt. Hobbs and Officer Duguay then searched the vehicle and found a ziplock bag containing a white crystal substance which field-tested positive as methamphetamine. The baggie was found in a compartment in the dash under the radio. A syringe was found in the bottom tray of the driver’s side door.
Gibson was initially held without bond pending his appearance in court. During his initial hearing, he was charged with possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony, and illegal possession of a syringe, a Level 6 felony. His bond was set at $8,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. After the hearing, he posted $800 cash and was released.
When Workman was booked in, his bond was set at $1,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. He posted $100 cash and was released, then failed to appear as ordered. When Workman is taken into custody again and appears in court, he will be charged with carrying a handgun without a license, a Class A misdemeanor.
