An ISP Trooper reported he clocked two drivers going 108 mph while racing on I-69.
Keith Allen Barnett, Jr., 19, and Ethan Edward Preski, 18, both from Avon, Ind., are being summoned to appear in Greene Superior Court for initial hearings in October.
Indiana State Police Master Trooper John Yung was on routine patrol, northbound on I-69 on Sunday, August 15, around 10:13 a.m. when he saw two southbound vehicles traveling in excess of the 70 mph limit.
According to Trooper Yung, a white 2014 Ford Focus was in the left lane and a brown 2010 Ford Edge was in the right lane, matching speeds, racing. He clocked them at 108 mph and turned around in the median to pursue.
The trooper lost sight of the two vehicles for a short time due to the terrain and when they were back in sight, the Ford Edge had exited the interstate and was headed south on US 231 south of I-69, but the Ford Focus was still on the interstate. A traffic stop was initiated.
The driver of the Ford Focus was identified as Preski with three male passengers on board. Preski said they were going to Holiday World. He said the other driver’s name was Keith but he didn’t know his last name. When questioned by Trooper Yung, one of the passengers identified the other driver as Keith Barnett and said he went to school with them. Another passenger provided Barnett’s phone number.
Later, Trooper Yung had a dispatcher at the Bloomington Post conduct a search for Barnett and determined he also lived in Avon. Trooper Yung gave Barnett a call on the phone number provided and set up an appointment to meet with Barnett at his residence but when he arrived, Barnett did not want to talk without an attorney present.
Both drivers are facing charges of:
Competing in a speed contest, a Class B misdemeanor, and
Reckless driving at unreasonable speed that endangers safety, a Class C misdemeanor.
Both drivers have been summoned to appear in court, Barnett on October 18, Preski on October 25.
