Jayden Thomas Payne, 18, Gosport, was arrested by Deputy Marshal Ryan Montgomery of the Worthington Police Department last Saturday night, April 24.

Officer Montgomery responded at 7:16 p.m. last Saturday after the sheriff’s department received a report about an unruly subject, identified as Jayden Payne, at a residence on South Jefferson Street in Worthington.

When Officer Montgomery arrived, Payne had left but he saw a fresh muddy footprint on an outside glass door, then talked to the resident who explained Payne had broken things and thrown things inside the house, including three doors and a chair. There was a hole in a wall and the resident said Payne also threw a washer out the back door. During the altercation, Payne allegedly hit the resident and the family dog bit Payne on an arm. At least one juvenile was present in the house during the altercation.

Payne had apparently been living there and the resident wanted to know how to get him out but didn’t want to press charges because Payne is the boyfriend of a family member.

Police were looking for Payne then at 8:44 p.m., Worthington Town Marshal Jim O’Malley located Payne driving a vehicle and initiated a traffic stop at the intersection of Worthington Street and North Edwards Street. Officer Montgomery responded to assist on the scene.

When Officer Montgomery arrived, Payne was in the driver’s seat of his vehicle and Marshal O’Malley was on the passenger side of the vehicle, telling Payne to exit and that he was under arrest for battery. As Officer Montgomery approached the driver’s side of the vehicle, Payne appeared to be upset and swung the driver’s door open. Payne exited and was ordered to stop and turn around but he did not comply with Officer Montgomery’s order.

When Officer Montgomery started to handcuff Payne, he pulled away and said not to touch him. Payne was secured against the vehicle and O’Malley rushed from the other side of the vehicle to assist in securing Payne.

Payne was transported to the Greene County Jail where he was booked in at 9:43 p.m.

Officer Montgomery later conducted further interviews with the resident and a juvenile witness to Payne’s actions in the house.

Payne’s bond was set at $5,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. He posted $500 and was released on Sunday, April 25.

Charges are pending but he was arrested on preliminary charges of domestic battery, a Level 6 felony, and resisting law enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor.
