Solsberry man arrested after driving dirt bike on public road

A 47-year-old Solsberry man with a lifetime suspension of his driver’s license was arrested on various charges after operating a dirt bike on a public road in eastern Greene County on Aug. 18.

Greene County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Jordan Allor arrested Jason R. Nichols on charges of operating a motor vehicle after forfeiture of license for life, resisting law enforcement, and possession of marijuana.

Allor was stationary at the intersection of Tulip Road and Newark Road at approximately 5 p.m. on Aug. 18 when a black and green Kawasaki dirt bike, driven by Nichols, stopped at the intersection. According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Greene Superior Court, Allor motioned for Nichols to pull next to him into a parking lot to conduct a traffic stop.

When asked what he was doing, Nichols told Allor he was traveling to a residence two blocks away; however, according to the probable cause affidavit, Allor informed him he could not ride the dirt bike on the road. While checking his license with dispatch, Nichols allegedly told Allor he wasn’t driving a car because he’d previously been in trouble for that and had a lifetime suspension. Allor informed him that he cannot drive anything on the road as he is considered a habitual traffic offender.

Allor asked Nichols to move the bike further into the parking lot. Nichols allegedly got off the bike and began pushing it to the passenger side of Allor’s patrol vehicle. Nichols pushed the bike to the rear of the patrol car and then stopped. According to the probable cause affidavit, Nichols bent down and began doing something with the bike. Then, he stood up and allegedly looked for traffic and began running with the dirt bike. Allor tackled him to the ground in the middle of the roadway; however, Nichols physically resisted. Allor was able to get Nichols in handcuffs.

Once in Allor’s patrol vehicle, Nichols allegedly admitted to having marijuana in his left pants pocket. Allor, according to the probable cause affidavit, located a round metal container with green plant-like material inside.

Nichols was transported to Greene County Jail where his bond was set at $11,500 surety with 10% cash allowed.

He appeared in Greene Superior Court on Aug. 22 for an initial hearing.

He is being charged with:

  • Operating a motor vehicle after forfeiture of license for life, a Level 5 Felony

  • Resisting law enforcement, a Class A Misdemeanor

  • Possession of marijuana, a Class B Misdemeanor
