Solsberry man accused of resisting law enforcement

A warrant was issued for a Solsberry man who was a no-show in court. He’s now facing a new case for allegedly being uncooperative when three officers showed up at his house to arrest him.

Thomas Edward White, 61, Solsberry, was arrested by Indiana State Police Trooper Richard Klun on Tuesday morning, November 24.

White has had a criminal case pending against him since his arrest on May 26, also by Trooper Klun, when White allegedly used a handgun to fire four or five times in the shooting of somebody’s lawn mower. When he was taken into custody, he was reported to have a small bag with a white powder residue in his pocket.

White was subsequently charged with:

  • Unlawful possession of a firearm by serious violent felony, a Level 4 felony,

  • Possession of methamphetamine, a Level 5 felony, and

  • Driving while suspended – a knowing violation with a prior conviction within 10 years, a Class A misdemeanor.

A jury trial was coming up on December 8 with a pre-trial conference scheduled for November 18. But when White failed to show up for the conference, the jury trial was canceled and a warrant was issued for White’s arrest.

So on Tuesday, November 24, Trooper Klun and Trooper Caleb Garvin and GCSD Det. Shawn Cullison arrived at White’s residence on North Sherfield Road, Solsberry, to serve the warrant. They were familiar with the residence and positioned their patrol vehicles so if a person looked out of a window, they would see police cars on three sides of the house. With two officers to the back and one to the front, one knocked numerous times over the course of about four minutes with nobody coming to the door. However, at one point a woman opened a curtain and looked out at an officer but did not answer the door. The officers continued to knock.

After another two or three minutes, White opened a door. Det. Cullison informed White he had an active arrest warrant and White then attempted to close the door but Det. Cullison prevented the door from being shut.

White allegedly attempted to retreat farther into the residence but was detained. White allegedly was physically resisting and tried to pull away before being placed in a patrol vehicle.

White was booked into the Greene County Jail at 11:25 a.m. and he’s still there, being held without bond in the felony case.

The pre-trial conference has been rescheduled for December 16, but he was in court yesterday for an initial hearing in a new case – he’s been charged with resisting law enforcement – knowingly or intentionally forcibly resists, a Class A misdemeanor.
