Saturday night pursuit from Greene County into Monroe County ends with crash and arrest

A wanted man took off and fled from GCSD deputies when he came into contact with them in eastern Greene County Saturday night and led officers from three departments in a pursuit that ended in Bloomington. During the pursuit, the suspect allegedly tried to hit a GCSD deputy head on and did hit a MCSD deputy in a Bloomington parking lot. No serious injuries were reported. The suspect is in custody and has been booked into the Greene County Jail.

Deputy Sergeant Jordan Allor and Deputy Logan Milligan first came into contact with a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban on Lawrence Hollow Drive at approximately 6:57 PM on Saturday, December 3.

Cody D. Reeves, 28, Heltonville, was the driver of the Suburban that fled the scene northbound. After about a half mile, the Suburban stopped in a yard on Lawrence Hollow Drive and then fled again through the yard and headed south on Lawrence Hollow Drive.

While the Suburban was going south on Lawrence Hollow Drive, another GCSD sheriff's deputy was coming into the area, responding to assist in the pursuit in a patrol vehicle. Reeves allegedly attempted to hit the deputy’s patrol vehicle head on.

Once he got out of the Lawrence Hollow area, Reeves fled eastbound on East State Road 445 then northbound on North State Road 45. According to deputies, while Reeves was fleeing law enforcement, he was crossing the center line and driving into the oncoming lane of traffic.

The pursuit continued into Monroe County and once in Bloomington, Reeves drove into the Circle K gas station parking lot at the intersection of West SR 45 and Leonard Springs Road. Reeves then came out of the parking lot onto Leonard Springs Road and then turned east onto West SR 45 / Bloomfield Road. And then Reeves turned into the parking lot of the Walmart store in Bloomington.

According to information provided by Jeremy Hogan of the Bloomingtonian, Captain Randy Jacobs of the Monroe County Sheriff's Department said that after MCSD was contacted about the pursuit by Greene County, Monroe County deputies joined the pursuit and attempted to get ahead of the chase with stop sticks but they were unsuccessful in stopping the vehicle.

According to GCSD Deputy Sergeant Allor, the lead investigator in this incident, Reeves continued driving around the Walmart parking lot through open parking spaces and around the shopping center building.

And then he hit the patrol vehicle of a Monroe County Sheriff's Deputy in the parking lot and came to a stop. At that point, Reeves was taken into custody without further incident.

MCSD Captain Jacobs reported that MCSD Deputy Sergeant Brooks was driving in a driving lane with emergency lights and siren activated when his patrol vehicle was hit by the Suburban in a right-angle collision resulting in damage to the right passenger side of the patrol vehicle. Captain Jacobs reported Sergeant Brooks sustained pain in his right hand, arm and back and was treated and released from Monroe Hospital.

Deputy Sergeant Allor said Reeves was wanted on a warrant issued out of Lawrence County for resisting law enforcement with a vehicle – a Level 6 felony, driving while suspended – a Class A misdemeanor, and reckless driving – a Class A misdemeanor.

Reeves was booked into the Greene County Jail on preliminary charges of:

  • Resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, a Level 6 felony,

  • Criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, a Level 6 felony,

  • Driving while suspended with a prior, a Class A misdemeanor, and

  • Reckless driving, a Class A misdemeanor.

Reeves will be facing additional charges in Monroe County as well.

In addition to deputies from the Greene County Sheriff's Department, personnel responded from the Monroe County Sheriff's Department, the Bloomington Police Department, the Monroe County Fire District, and Ken’s Westside Wrecker Service.
