Ramirez, accused of causing a fatal crash, may be released temporarily for medical treatment
/A Springville man, accused of driving drunk and causing a fatal crash in May, has not posted bond and is still in custody but may be released temporarily in order to seek medical treatment.
Raul Ramirez, 52, was arrested on Monday, July 23.
When he appeared in Greene Superior Court for his initial hearing on Tuesday, July 24, he was charged with:
- Operating a vehicle causing a death while intoxicated with an alcohol concentration equivalent to .15 or more, a Level 4 felony,
- Operating a vehicle causing a death while intoxicated with an alcohol concentration equivalent to at least .08 or more with a previous conviction of operating a vehicle while intoxicated within the 10 previous years, a Level 4 felony,
- Two counts of operating a vehicle causing serious bodily injury while intoxicated with an alcohol concentration equivalent to at least .08 or more, both Level 6 felonies,
- Auto theft involving theft of the entire vehicle, a Level 6 felony, and
- Operating a vehicle while driver’s license is suspended or revoked – a knowing or intentional violation, with a prior conviction, a Class A misdemeanor.
His driving privileges were immediately suspended.
He was found eligible for a court-appointed attorney and Greene County Public Defender Alan Baughman was appointed to represent Ramirez.
On Thursday, July 26, the defense filed a motion asking for Ramirez to be released on his own recognizance.
That motion was denied by Judge Dena Martin on Monday, July 30.
Then a bond hearing was scheduled last Thursday, August 2. As a result, the judge did grant a defense request for Ramirez to be released temporarily for medical treatment. No further information on the nature of the treatment is public record.
As of Friday, Ramirez was still listed as an inmate at the Greene County Jail.
The amount of his bond was not reduced or changed and remains set at $33,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed.
His case is set for a review hearing at the end of August.
