Lyons woman arrested after high-speed OWI stop on State Road 67

A Lyons woman is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 22 after police say she drove a blue Corvette at high speed, swerved across lanes, and registered a blood-alcohol concentration more than twice Indiana’s legal limit.

According to a probable-cause affidavit, Worthington Police Officer Jeremy Brinkman was alerted by Greene County Dispatch around 6 p.m. Sept. 5 to watch for a blue 2025 Chevrolet Corvette traveling south from Owen County into Greene County at a high rate of speed.

Brinkman soon spotted the Corvette near State Road 67 and County Road 100 West. He followed at a safe distance and reported the car swerved within its lane and struck a curb near the intersection of State Road 67 and Terre Haute Road. Brinkman initiated a traffic stop at State Road 67 and Myra Street.

The driver, Sheri R. Hamilton, 57, told officers she was returning from Bloomington and admitted she was tired and asked if she had hit the curb. Brinkman noted a strong odor of alcohol, according to the probable cause.

Deputy Marshal Caleb Ray and Greene County Sheriff’s Deputy Jordan Allor assisted at the scene. Hamilton told officers she had taken medication for balance issues and consumed “two containers of wine,” though she did not specify the size. She consented to field-sobriety testing but failed all three assessments.

A preliminary breath test showed a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.216, nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08. Hamilton was advised of Indiana’s implied-consent law and agreed to a chemical test. Blood samples were drawn at Greene County General Hospital and sent to the Indiana Department of Toxicology for analysis.

Hamilton was taken to the Greene County Jail, where bond was set at $4,000 surety with 10% cash allowed. She was released after posting $400.

She faces charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, a Class A misdemeanor, and operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor.

Hamilton is scheduled for an initial hearing Sept. 22 in Greene Superior Court.
