Lyons man arrested on warrant, facing drug charges
/A warrant was issued on Monday for the arrest of a Lyons man accused of possession of a quantity of methamphetamine. By Wednesday, he was in custody.
Patrick Lee Hamm, 28, of Lyons, was taken into custody by Greene County Sheriff’s Deputy Terry Wade on a warrant that issued Monday out of Greene Circuit Court as a result of an investigation by GCSD Deputy James Carpenter.
Back on Thursday afternoon, November 29, Carpenter was northbound on State Road 67 near County Road 400 South when he saw a red passenger car traveling south on the highway. Carpenter said as the car passed, he could see the driver was Patrick Hamm and he knew Hamm’s driving status was suspended. He also knew Hamm drove a red Geo Metro passenger car.
Carpenter turned around and was attempting to catch up to the car for a traffic stop but as he entered Marco, he saw the car was parked at a residence and Hamm was knocking on the front door.
Carpenter said Hamm did not have any identification and while Hamm argued that he wasn’t driving the car, the deputy maintained that he’d just seen Hamm driving it. Carpenter informed Hamm the vehicle would be towed due to Hamm’s driving status. He then issued Hamm a citation for driving while suspended and Hamm walked away from the scene.
The vehicle was towed and when Carpenter performed the required inventory, he observed a hypodermic syringe sticking out from behind the driver’s door panel. The inventory was stopped and Carpenter applied for a search warrant which was granted. The warrant was executed later the same day.
Carpenter reported finding the hypodermic syringe with the needle sticking out from the door panel, a purple Crown Royal bag containing $140 cash and a clear plastic bag containing a crystal substance, as well as a spoon with residue. The crystal substance tested positive as methamphetamine and weighed in at 7.3 grams.
In a probable cause affidavit written by Deputy Carpenter, he added this detail of note, “On November 27th, 2018, at 10:39 a.m. Indiana Department of Child Services received a report advising Patrick Hamm had traded methamphetamine to a 15 year old male child for a play station 4 controller.”
A criminal case was filed against Hamm and the warrant issued. Hamm appeared at an initial hearing today, Thursday, December 13.
Hamm has been charged with possession of methamphetamine in an amount between five and ten grams, a Level 5 felony, and unlawful possession of a syringe, a Level 6 felony.
His bond has been set at $20,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed.
