Dane Russell Bolin, 32, Lyons, appeared in Greene Superior Court on Monday afternoon, December 16, for an initial hearing on charges of theft with a prior conviction, a Level 6 felony, and unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle, a Class B misdemeanor.

A warrant for Bolin’s arrest was issued back on November 18. He turned himself in and was booked in by Greene County Jail Commander Ken Conolty on Monday, December 2. His bond had been set at $4,500 surety with ten percent cash allowed so he posted $450, was released and given this week’s court date.

The case has been under investigation by Lyons Town Marshal Andrew Hamilton since August 20 when a Lyons resident reported his car keys and his wallet had been stolen out of his vehicle while it was parked in his driveway on North Walnut Street in Lyons.

When Officer Hamilton interviewed the resident, he said he usually leaves his car keys in the car at night. He also said after he realized he’d left his wallet in the center console and it was missing, he called his bank to deactivate his debit card.

Just a couple hours after deactivating the card, the bank’s fraud department notified him that someone had tried to transfer $125 out of his account into a woman’s account.

A few days later, Officer Hamilton was able to locate the woman and met her at the sheriff’s department for an interview. She allegedly said her boyfriend, Dane Bolin, had stolen the car keys and wallet out of the car. She said when she tried to make the transfer, she did not see the card because Bolin read the card information to her and she did not know who the card belonged to. She allegedly said she learned who the card belonged to when the resident sent her a message about the transfer of funds.

According to Officer Hamilton, messages were also exchanged between the resident and Bolin in which Bolin told the resident he would pay whatever money he was out from the theft and that he did not want his girlfriend going to jail.

Officer Hamilton said Bolin was previously convicted of theft as a Class D felony in Greene County in 2012.
