Linton man arrested on drug, OWI charges after erratic driving, 911 calls
/A Linton man was arrested early April 15 after deputies say he made multiple 911 calls and was later found driving erratically with methamphetamine in his vehicle.
According to court documents, Ren D. Barton faces preliminary charges of possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony, operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangerment, and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
Deputy Braxton Clark of the Greene County Sheriff’s Office reported deputies were dispatched to a residence in Switz City around 1:29 a.m. after receiving multiple 911 hang-up calls linked to the location.
When deputies arrived, two individuals were outside the residence and initially denied calling 911. One of the individuals was identified as Barton.
According to the affidavit, dispatch later confirmed Barton had made the calls, reporting suspicious activity and vehicles near the residence.
A short time later, deputies located a green Ford Ranger matching the vehicle Barton had been seen entering. Authorities reported the truck was being driven erratically on County Road 900 West, swerving into oncoming traffic and nearly leaving the roadway.
Deputies conducted a traffic stop and made contact with Barton, who told officers he believed individuals were following him.
While speaking with Barton, deputies observed signs of impairment, including paranoia, hyperactivity and uncontrolled movements, according to the report.
During the investigation, Barton admitted to recent drug use and indicated he had used methamphetamine within the past few days, the affidavit states.
Officers conducted field sobriety testing, which indicated impairment. Barton was taken into custody and a search of the vehicle was conducted.
According to the affidavit, officers located a clear plastic bag containing a white powdery substance, which later field-tested positive for methamphetamine.
Barton was transported to Greene County General Hospital for a blood draw and later taken to the Greene County Jail where he was initially held without bond.
He appeared in court on April 17 for an initial hearing. At that time, a bond of $25,000 surety with 10% cash was set.
