Linton man arrested following crash investigation, faces charge of felony marijuana possession

A Linton man was arrested June 18 following a traffic crash investigation that led deputies to discover more than 100 grams of suspected marijuana inside his vehicle.

Robert Stephen Zygai, 33, faces a preliminary charge of possession of marijuana, a Level 6 felony, after deputies allegedly found more than 30 grams of marijuana and determined he had a prior drug-related conviction.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Greene County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Harvey Holt and Linton Police Department Officer Jocelyn Astleford responded to a two-vehicle crash at State Road 54 and Echles Avenue shortly before 2:40 p.m. While speaking with Zygai, the driver of one of the vehicles, Astleford reported smelling the odor of raw marijuana coming from the vehicle.

Court documents state Zygai denied having marijuana in the vehicle and told deputies he had been helping someone move. Deputies searched the vehicle after Greene County Sheriff’s Department Deputy James Carpenter’s K-9 reportedly alerted to the presence of narcotics.

During the search, deputies allegedly located a dark blue lunch box on the passenger-side floorboard containing four plastic bags of a green plant-like substance. The material was later weighed at approximately 125 grams and field-tested positive for marijuana, according to the affidavit.

Investigators also noted a prior conviction for possession of methamphetamine in Zygai's criminal history, which elevated the marijuana possession allegation to a Level 6 felony.

Zygai was transported to the Greene County Jail following the investigation. His bond was set at $1,000 surety with 10% cash allowed, and he was released after posting $100.

He is scheduled to appear in Greene Superior Court June 29 for an initial hearing.
