Linton man accused of thefts using debit card without permission
/A Linton man is facing three counts of theft for using someone’s debit card without permission to purchase gas, smokes and over $154 worth of purchases in the “Call of Duty” gaming app.
Last week a summons was sent to Dalton Monahan, 26, Linton, ordering him to appear in Greene Superior Court for an initial hearing on October 8.
Monahan is facing preliminary charges of three counts of theft. All are Class A misdemeanors.
Detective Logan Hobbs of the Linton Police Department started an investigation on August 25 into a report of thefts using a debit card without permission.
The alleged victim told Det. Hobbs that Monahan lives nearby and on Monday, August 24, he came to her apartment and offered to help her by picking up her prescriptions from Walmart. She said she gave him $20 cash as a gift for his help and gave him her debit card to use to pay for her prescriptions. She said she did not authorize him to make any other purchases with the debit card but afterward, she noticed several purchases were made during the time Monahan had the debit card.
When Det. Hobbs interviewed Monahan at the police department, Monahan was cooperative and allegedly admitted he had used the debit card for his own purchases without permission. Det. Hobbs said Monahan made a written statement in the form of an apology letter.
Det. Hobbs reported that besides picking up the prescriptions, Monahan used the card to purchase a carton of cigarettes at Murphy’s gas station for $60.82, gas for his vehicle at Chuckle’s gas station for $10.04, and then he made seven purchases in the mobile app for the “Call of Duty” game for $154.37.
