Timothy Eugene Smith, 64, Jasonville, was arrested on Tuesday, December 31, by Sgt. Brian Pilant of the Jasonville Police Department. Smith was booked in to the Greene County Jail around 10 p.m.

When Sgt. Pilant was on duty on New Year’s Eve, he saw a Ford truck sitting at the gas pumps at Casey’s and thought it was the same one he had stopped previously. During the earlier stop, the truck had expired plates and the driver did not have a valid license or insurance.

So when he saw the driver walking from the building, Sgt. Pilant recognized him and knew he didn’t have a driver’s license.

Smith was the driver. With Sgt. Pilant watching, Smith pulled out of the gas station driving the truck and headed west on Main Street then turned right onto Fry Street. When Sgt. Pilant activated the red and blue lights, the truck did not stop. Pilant hit the wig-wags and the siren and the truck did not stop.

When the truck turned into a driveway and did stop, Smith was removed from the truck and handcuffed.

Smith allegedly said he was not trying to get away but was trying to get off the roadway in a safe place. Sgt. Pilant said he didn’t believe that because the man had passed a parking lot, a side street and driveways without pulling over.

Sgt. Pilant reported the plate on the truck belonged to a different vehicle and was expired, Smith had no insurance and Smith did not have a driver’s license.

Smith was issued warnings for expired plates, false and fictitious plate and no financial responsibility and is facing criminal charges of resisting law enforcement, a Level 6 felony, and knowingly or intentionally operating a motor vehicle without ever receiving a license, a Class C misdemeanor.

Smith’s bond was set at $4,500 surety with ten percent cash allowed. He is scheduled to appear in Greene Superior Court tomorrow, Tuesday, January 7, for his initial hearing.
