Jasonville man charged with criminal confinement, domestic battery following reported altercation

A 35-year-old Jasonville man was arrested June 2 after police alleged he prevented a woman from leaving a residence during a domestic dispute.

Paul Eugene Bedwell faces charges of criminal confinement, a Level 6 felony, and domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor.

According to court documents, officers with the Jasonville Police Department were dispatched to a residence on Main Street at approximately 6:29 a.m. June 1 for a report of a domestic battery that had recently occurred.

Police met with the victim and a witness, who reported an altercation involving Bedwell.

The victim told police she anticipated an argument when she arrived home and brought friends with her. According to the affidavit, an argument began shortly after they arrived.

The victim told investigators that during the approximately 15-minute confrontation, Bedwell repeatedly prevented her from moving freely, pinned her against a wall, chased her when she attempted to leave, and grabbed her in an effort to stop her from leaving the residence.

The witness corroborated the victim’s account and provided video recordings of portions of the incident.

She reportedly told officers that he frequently became aggressive toward her and that he would not allow her to leave when she wanted to do so.

While speaking with officers, Bedwell later admitted he had held her against a door frame while asking her to talk with him.

Based on witness statements, video evidence, and statements made during the investigation, police determined there was probable cause to believe Bedwell knowingly touched the victim in a rude, insolent, or angry manner and knowingly confined her without her consent.

A warrant for Bedwell's arrest was issued June 2. He was taken into custody later that day.

He was initially held without bond. When he appeared in Greene Superior Court June 3 for an initial hearing, a bond of $25,000 surety with 10% cash was allowed.
