Robert Lovelace, 23, of Jasonville, was taken into custody by Linton Police Officer Orry Phipps last Thursday and was scheduled to appear in court yesterday.

Officer Phipps was dispatched to Greene County General Hospital at 2:11 a.m. on Thursday, October 4. A family member of Lovelace was being treated in the emergency room and Lovelace had come in with them.

LPD Reserve Officer Kent Medlock also responded and when the officers arrived, Lovelace was being detained by a hospital security officer.

Officer Phipps talked to a couple of ER nurses. One said Lovelace was acting fine until he went out to his vehicle then came back into the ER and was acting very weird.

According to Phipps, the nurse said Lovelace had picked up a metal IV pole, was holding it up in the air and swinging it in the nurse’s direction. When she asked him what he was going to do with the pole, he allegedly said, “What do you think I’m going to do with it?”

The security officer then removed Lovelace from the room and took him to another area until law enforcement arrived but told Phipps he had to hold Lovelace in a corner against a wall due to Lovelace’s unruly behavior.

After talking to the nurses and the security officer, when Phipps attempted to handcuff Lovelace, Lovelace allegedly refused to place his hands behind his back, pushed and fought against all three officers, and did not cooperate when getting into a patrol vehicle.

Lovelace was arrested and transported to Greene County Jail where he was booked in at 2:59 a.m. with bond set at $5,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. He has since posted bond and was released.

Lovelace was scheduled to appear in Greene Superior Court on Tuesday to be charged with resisting law enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor.
