Jayce Edward Troup, 26, Linton, currently an inmate in the Greene County Jail, has been charged with strangulation, a Level 6 felony, and battery resulting in bodily injury, a Class A misdemeanor, following an investigation by Deputy Jordan Gooding of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department into an incident between two inmates in the jail.

In late September, Deputy Gooding was dispatched to talk to jail staff about a fight between two inmates. The incident was recorded on the jail’s video surveillance system.

According to Deputy Gooding, the video from a holding cell showed one inmate talking on the phone while three other inmates were lying down. The one talking on the phone then walked to his bunk and sat down and a conversation started between the inmate and Jayce Troup, who appeared agitated and stood up. The other inmate also stood up and the two were “in each other’s faces.”

Troup is accused of placing his left hand on the other inmate’s neck, pushing him back onto another inmate who was lying down. Troup allegedly then drug the inmate to the floor and continued punching him in the face until jail staff stopped the fight.

Troup declined to speak to Deputy Gooding about the incident.

The inmate said he was on the phone with his grandpa and after he got off, Troup said he was sick and tired of him being on the phone. He said he told Troup it was none of his business and then Troup started to beat him up.

Deputy Gooding observed marks and bruising on the inmate’s face and neck, bruising on the right side of his forehead and swelling under his right eye. The inmate said he could not breathe and thought he was going to lose consciousness when Troup grabbed him by the throat.

When the new criminal case was filed against Troup, a warrant was issued for his arrest. The warrant was read to him in jail.
