Scott Martin Nelson, 31, Ellettsville, was arrested by Sgt. Bobby Pierce of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department during a traffic stop late last Friday night, October 16. Nelson was booked into the Greene County Jail at 1:08 a.m. on Saturday, October 17. As of late today, he is still in jail and is scheduled to be in court in tomorrow morning.

Late last Friday, Sgt. Pierce conducted a traffic stop on a green 2000 Kia Sephia near the intersection of County Road 600 West and CR 200 South in the Lyons area. The reason for the stop was for two traffic violations – driving left of center and failure to signal a turn. The violations allegedly occurred on Broad Street in Lyons.

The driver, who was later identified as Scott Nelson, did not have identification and he gave Sgt. Pierce a different name – which turned out to be his brother’s name. When the name did not check out, the driver was asked to exit the vehicle. During a pat-down, a “meth pipe” with a white residue was found in a pocket.

When Sgt. Pierce gave the driver another chance to tell the truth about his identity, the driver admitted he gave false info because he knew he was wanted on a warrant issued out of Monroe County.

Nelson’s driver’s license was suspended and the warrant was on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated with endangerment and operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent to .15 or more.

Nelson was taken into custody and Officer Joe Riley of the Linton Police Department, along with his K9 Kona, arrived to assist on the scene. When K9 Kona was deployed to sniff around the vehicle, K9 Kona alerted to the presence of a controlled substance.

During searches of Nelson and the vehicle, officers located a clear plastic ziplock bag containing a crystal substance, a broken glass smoking device, another smoking device containing white residue in the center console and a black digital scale and another smoking device with white residue inside a backpack in the trunk.

Nelson was being held without bond pending court appearance. He’s also being held without bond on the Monroe County warrant.

When he appears in Greene Superior Court in the morning for his initial hearing, his bond will be set in the Greene County case and he will be formally charged with possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony, and possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.
