GCSD Dallaire reports several high-water rescues in Greene County

After several high-water rescues in the Greene County area, Chief Deputy George Dallaire of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department is urging drivers to exercise extra caution during these rainy, foggy days and nights.

Dallaire says last Friday, February 8, most areas of Greene County received 4-5 inches of rain on top of already saturated and frozen ground.

Dallaire said that large amount of rain resulted in the Greene County Sheriff’s Department, Indiana Conservation Officers, and local fire departments to be involved in several high-water rescues of motorists stranded on top of their vehicles.

Dallaire reported that today, Tuesday, February 12, the GC Sheriff’s Department responded to a water rescue with the Switz City Fire Department in the early morning hours. In this incident, the motorist accidentally drove into high water on a dark foggy morning.

“We ask drivers to be aware of the fact a flooded roadway can appear to be dark pavement and exercise extra caution when driving, in particular when it is still dark and foggy,” said Dallaire.

“The extended forecast calls for more precipitation and it takes very little rain to cause roadways to flood with the saturated soils and full creeks we are currently experiencing.”
