A woman on her way to work, walking on the east side of Worthington, was attacked by a dog. She required reconstructive surgery to repair her injuries. The owner of the dog named Brutus is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, February 14.

When John Robert Poole appears in Greene Superior Court on Thursday, he will be formally charged with harboring a non-immunized dog, a Class B misdemeanor.

The attack incident, which occurred back in November, has been under investigation by Deputy Marshal James T. Harrington of the Worthington Police Department.

Harrington was contacted by Bert Clark, the owner of the Route 67 Ice cream and Diner on Commercial Street. Clark said one of his employees who resides in the Buffaloe Inn located at 208 Christian Street, was knocked down and bitten by a large brown dog while she was walking to work.

Clark told the officer the attack was unprovoked, the woman was walking on the sidewalk that runs east and west along Central Avenue on the south side of the roadway.

The dog’s owner was standing in the yard when the attack occurred. He yelled at the dog and it retreated back into the yard. The woman got up and walked on to work.

Once she arrived at the Diner, a coworker said her ear was bleeding profusely and she took the woman to Greene County General Hospital.

From Greene County General, the woman was transferred to Regional Hospital for reconstructive surgery on her ear. Harrington said medical personnel confirmed the top portion of the woman’s ear was amputated.

Harrington reported that Brutus is a three-year-old male dog who was not vaccinated at any point in 2018, according to records at Royer Veterinary Services. Brutus, who lives at 102 Christian Street with his owner, was quarantined for 10 days.
