Fleeing Jeep crashes into pond, driver found hiding in tall grass
/With red and blue lights flashing behind him, a driver sped into someone’s driveway, drove through a fence and crashed his Jeep in a pond. The driver made it to shore and the pursuing deputy found him hiding in tall grass. That all happened after midnight and he was booked in to jail early yesterday.
Dane Russell Bolin, 33, Lyons, was arrested by Deputy Alan Jackson of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department early yesterday, Monday, October 12. Bolin was booked into the Greene County Jail at 4:42 a.m.
At approximately 12:21 a.m. yesterday, Deputy Jackson was on patrol on State Road 54 headed east from Linton when he noticed the headlight was out on an oncoming blue Jeep Grand Cherokee that was headed west toward Linton. So Deputy Jackson turned around at County Road 900 West and caught up to the Jeep. He hit the red and blue lights to initiate a traffic stop but the Jeep sped up then turned south into the driveway of a house located in the 9000 block of SR 54 east of Linton.
The Jeep, however, did not stop in the driveway. Deputy Jackson said its speed increased in the driveway and it crashed through an electric fence and drove on into a livestock field. Deputy Jackson said once he also got his patrol vehicle through the fence, he headed out into the field looking for the Jeep.
Deputy Jackson found the Jeep, crashed into a pond. The window on the driver’s side of the Jeep was rolled down and nobody was inside the vehicle. But Deputy Jackson found a grass trail from the pond that was wet, with grass pushed down and he followed it.
Along the way, the deputy found a wet black baseball cap that contained a clear plastic Ziploc bag that contained a white crystal substance and another clear plastic Ziploc bag with white residue.
Deputy Jackson continued the search and was able to locate the driver of the Jeep face down in tall grass. Dane Bolin was identified as the driver who was taken into custody, and who complained of pain from the crash. Deputy Jackson requested an ambulance.
GCSD Sgt. Bobby Pierce then arrived to assist Deputy Jackson on the scene, as well as the Greene County Ambulance Service, and Bolin was loaded up and transported to Greene County General Hospital.
A towing service from Worthington also responded to the scene and as they were pulling the Jeep from the pond, hospital personnel contacted the deputies and said Bolin was refusing treatment and was going to walk out of the hospital so the deputies went to the hospital.
Once the deputies arrived in Bolin’s room at the hospital, Bolin then accepted medical treatment and allegedly admitted he was the driver who fled because his driver’s license was suspended. After treatment was completed, he was taken to jail.
The deputies were then not on the scene to conduct an inventory of the Jeep when it was pulled out of the pond, but the Jeep was transported to a secure facility. Deputy Jackson was able to complete the inventory on Monday evening.
Deputy Jackson reported finding, in the Jeep, a small black leather bag with four clear and orange syringes, a clear plastic bag containing a liquid, a storage device card and a small cap. The contents in the syringes field-tested positive for methamphetamine. All items were sent to an ISP lab for analysis.
Bolin remains in jail where he’s being held without bond pending his appearance in court for an initial hearing – no date has been set yet.
Preliminary charges filed against Bolin include:
Possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony,
Resisting law enforcement, using a vehicle, a Level 6 felony, and
Driving while suspended – a knowing violation with a prior conviction within 10 years, a Class A misdemeanor.
