Felony OWI charges filed after traffic stop

A 44-year-old Bloomington man faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after deputies say he was arrested for driving while intoxicated early this month following a traffic stop in Switz City.

According to court documents, Michael Reed was arrested Jan. 3 and faces charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction within seven years, operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent of .15 or more, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction within seven years, and operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent of .15 or more with a prior conviction.

Deputy Brandon DeMier with the Greene County Sheriff’s Department reported observing Reed driving eastbound on State Road 54 in a white GMC Sierra when the vehicle swerved across the fog line multiple times and failed to come to a complete stop at the intersection of State Roads 54 and 67. He also reported seeing a lit cigarette thrown from the passenger side of the vehicle.

After initiating a traffic stop, according to the probable cause affidavit, DeMier observed two open alcoholic beverage containers in the center console of the vehicle. Reed, who was driving, admitted to drinking alcohol and later told officers he had consumed between seven and eight beers after leaving a bar in Linton, according to court records.

Field sobriety testing was initiated at the scene but later continued at the Greene County Sheriff’s Office due to cold weather conditions. Deputies reported smelling alcohol on Reed’s breath and observing signs of impairment during testing, per the probable cause.

A preliminary breath test administered at the sheriff’s office showed a blood alcohol concentration of .280, according to court documents. A subsequent chemical breath test later recorded a BAC of .217.

Court records indicate Reed also has a prior conviction for operating a vehicle while intoxicated from December 2021.

Reed was booked into the Greene County Jail following his arrest. His bond was set at $8,000 surety with 10% cash allowed. He was released after posting $800.

He’s scheduled to appear in Greene Superior Court on Jan. 6 for an initial hearing.
