Driver of little red sports car charged with reckless driving
/A Bloomfield man was charged this week with reckless driving as a result of an incident that occurred back on Friday, December 6. He is accused of driving at speeds of 80-100 mph while traveling on the shoulder of a highway to pass a car on the right, then passing seven or eight cars, then passing several cars in a curve. One woman said she had three children in her vehicle when she was run off the road.
Logan J. Usrey, 20, Bloomfield, was summoned to appear in court yesterday but he retained an attorney who filed a motion to waive the initial hearing. That was approved, a not-guilty plea was entered for him and he’s due back in court in February.
Deputy Marshal Jordan Allor of the Bloomfield Police Department, the investigating officer, was dispatched along with Deputy Camron Frye of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department around 4:45 p.m. on Friday, December 6, after a family member called in about Usrey’s behavior that was possibly caused by ingesting too much prescription medication.
While the two officers were on the way to a residence in Bloomfield, they were advised Usrey had left the residence in a red Honda traveling at a high rate of speed.
Next, dispatch advised the officers a caller had reported a red Honda driving recklessly westbound on State Road 54 west of Bloomfield near REMC. A bit later, another caller reported a red Honda driving recklessly southbound on State Road 57.
Once Officer Allor and Deputy Frye were southbound on SR 57, they found the red Honda in the ditch on the east side of the highway with the airbags deployed. They found Usrey walking in the area of 1878 South SR 57.
Usrey allegedly said he had taken extra medication to sleep, but after getting into a disagreement with a family member, he wanted to have some fun.
According to the narrative written by Officer Allor in a probable cause affidavit, Usrey was not very cooperative. Allor said Usrey kept walking away from the officer toward traffic. Allor alleged Usrey spit in his patrol vehicle and kicked the ambulance, did not cooperate with ambulance personnel, used offensive language and had to be assisted into the ambulance.
Usrey was not arrested that day but was transported via Greene County Ambulance Service to IU Health Bloomington Hospital for medical attention.
Officer Allor then contacted individuals who had called the sheriff’s department about the reckless driver.
One man said he was going 55 mph when the red car going 80-90 passed him on the right, driving on the shoulder in the area of the Crossroads Café on SR 54 west of Bloomfield. He said the red car almost struck a guardrail then almost hit an oncoming vehicle head-on.
Another man said the red car passed him and six or seven other vehicles on SR 54 near County Road 250 West. He said he believed the red car was going about 100 mph.
Officer Allor also listened to the recordings of the callers who contacted dispatch. One woman said she was run off the road by a red two-door sports car. Then she frantically said the red car was passing other cars in a curve. She also said she had three small children with her in her vehicle.
Usrey has been charged with reckless driving at an unreasonable speed that endangers safety, a Class C misdemeanor, and refusal to aid an officer, a Class B misdemeanor.
