A Springville man, accused of driving drunk and causing a fatal crash in May that took the life of Jeremiah Murphy and injured two others including a young child, got out of jail in August on a temporary release granted so he could seek medical treatment. On Monday, he was back in custody for an alleged violation of the conditions of his release.

Raul Ramirez, 52, who resides in Blue Sky North, was arrested on Monday, July 23.

When he appeared in Greene Superior Court for his initial hearing on Tuesday, July 24, he was charged with:

Operating a vehicle causing a death while intoxicated with an alcohol concentration equivalent to .15 or more, a Level 4 felony,
Operating a vehicle causing a death while intoxicated with an alcohol concentration equivalent to at least .08 or more with a previous conviction of operating a vehicle while intoxicated within the 10 previous years, a Level 4 felony,
Two counts of operating a vehicle causing serious bodily injury while intoxicated with an alcohol concentration equivalent to at least .08 or more, both Level 6 felonies,
Auto theft involving theft of the entire vehicle, a Level 6 felony, and
Operating a vehicle while driver’s license is suspended or revoked – a knowing or intentional violation, with a prior conviction, a Class A misdemeanor.

His driving privileges were immediately suspended.

He was found eligible for a court-appointed attorney and Greene County Public Defender Alan Baughman was appointed to represent Ramirez.

On Thursday, July 26, the defense filed a motion asking for Ramirez to be released on his own recognizance. That motion was denied by Judge Dena Martin on Monday, July 30.

Then a bond hearing was scheduled on Thursday, August 2. As a result, the judge did grant a defense request for Ramirez to be released temporarily for medical treatment. No further information on the nature of the treatment was public record.

Ramirez was then released from jail.

Since his release, one hearing was conducted on September 20 to review his medical condition and another review hearing was set for yesterday, Monday, November 19.

Before the review hearing, a warrant had been issued for his arrest and Ramirez was taken into custody by Greene County Courthouse Security Officer Patrick Fulford.

Court records show the warrant was issued because there was reason to believe he has violated a condition of his bond. A hearing on this matter is scheduled for next week.
